These claims may sound logical, but they do not always match reality. They can lead businesses to rule out a channel or launch it poorly. Here is how these misconceptions played out in Serenity's case studies.
Case: Marketing a premium residential development in Saint Petersburg.
Misconception: High-income audiences in the premium segment use Instagram, described in the original article as restricted in Russia, rather than VKontakte.
What we found: VKontakte became a consistent source of leads for the project. Ads appeared not only in the VKontakte feed but also across its themed media properties, such as Mail.ru Weather and Mail.ru Auto.
We also used audience analysis on VKontakte to identify people through indirect signals: members of communities about luxury property, yachts and travel, and participants in private business clubs. During the resort season, we ran campaigns targeted to luxury country clubs and cottage communities in distinctive holiday destinations across the Leningrad region. We made little use of broad age and gender settings. Another important part of the work was retargeting warm audiences: website visitors, contacts from the client's CRM and people who opened but did not submit a lead form.
VK Ads lets advertisers build detailed audience profiles. Combined with regular updates to audiences, copy and creative—and close monitoring of CPM, CPC and CPL—this helped us maintain a steady result in a challenging category. For several months, the project generated a controlled flow of qualified leads at an average cost of RUB 14,000 and a CTR of 0.8%.
Case: Promoting B2B services.
Misconception: B2B decision-makers and directors do not use social media for work.
What we found: They do, but the audience is smaller and can fatigue quickly. This calls for hands-on work: regularly analysing employees at target companies and business communities, building retargeting lists from website visitors and fine-tuning bids. It is not a matter of setting up a campaign and leaving it alone; it needs daily optimisation. In this B2B case, manual, compliant audience research proved highly effective.
